Stages and procedure for writing a seminar paper

Even before the process of writing the seminar work, the author should clarify what is the purpose and the primary goal that the work should fulfill in its content, or it is necessary to define and name the central problem to be the subject of the author’s analysis.

If the seminar work is to show the character of a coherent, logically elaborated written work of a student with a high-quality analytical view of the examined issue, its elaboration requires a certain organization already in the preparatory phase. The activities related to the preparation are gradually going through individual stages, but they are not of a standardized nature, ie they are rather organizational recommendations for writing a seminar work, which are connected with the elaboration of a time-organizational plan, in order to eliminate shortcomings, whether from formal or in terms of content, which are, unfortunately, often caused by underestimating the time for final editing and final proofreading.

Choosing a topic, the topic under consideration: In principle, this is the most important step, as the complete content of the seminar paper must correspond to the set name. This phase is also determined by whether a free choice is left in the choice of topic, or the topics and analyzed phenomena are precisely defined. In the case of the possibility of a separate selection of the issue, we recommend that each student evaluate his / her professional skills and knowledge in the choice of topic, which implies that the attractiveness of the topic should not be a substantial factor of choice, as the assessment of author’s penetration into the essence of the investigated phenomenon is a priority attribute of processing quality work. Nevertheless, the topic should be sufficiently engaging for the student, and it is extremely beneficial if the author already has some knowledge in the context of the subject matter, ie he / she has an overview of the issue being solved as well as knowledge of, for example, research and empirical studies already implemented in the subject matter, thus offering a new perspective on the phenomenon under investigation and thus penetrating the essence of the problem from another perspective or approach. This methodological approach, using the comparative method, will enable the author to distinguish himself in a research question or in a structure, leading to a highly valuable way of professionally processing the subject matter based on independence and creativity.

Research and acquisition of bibliographic resources, study of relevant information sources: The selection of the topic is followed by a phase of searching for and obtaining sufficiently professional and trustworthy information sources within the preparatory phase, which are thematically consistent with the content line of the work. After acquainting with the available bibliographic resources, the author’s view on the subject is extended, which supports the formation of his own reflections on the definition of the primary goal of the seminar work, which is then adapted to the whole structure. At the same time, the study of resources helps to think through and refine not only the fundamental goal of the work, as the author should be able to gradually answer a few essential questions determining the nature of the seminar work. This is the reason for the choice of the examined issue, the methodological procedure used for the fulfillment of the objective, the author’s attitude to the examined issue, the essence of his creative approach, or the usability for practice, etc. Since the nature of the information sources used underlines the level and quality of the entire pre-qualification work, it is advisable to use the most up-to-date sources and not neglect the search for foreign professional sources or contributions in foreign languages ​​that are registered in reputable databases. Seminar works, like all other professional papers, are based solely on relevant bibliographic references and information, which means obtaining information and acquiring knowledge from professional books – monographs, articles from scientific journals, from domestic or international conference proceedings, from internal materials of various institutions, from laws and decrees, from research reports as well as from expert Internet sources.

Syllabus – Creating logically related parts and structuring the text: This step can be approached only after the main objective has been clarified (or, depending on the theme and scope, it may also be a hypothesis – the so-called research prediction) as well as a methodological approach , which we will apply with aspiration to achieve the intention of work (or validation, or negation of the set hypothesis). It is important to proceed in a logical sequence with an emphasis on finding connections between the main parts of the work (chapters) and their components (subchapters). The syllabus of the seminar paper thus represents the distribution of material into the content-related units, which should clearly and terminologically indicate what will be the main focus of the main chapters and individual subchapters of work. When designing and structuring the content of the seminar paper, we recommend keeping the principle of proportional distribution of the individual parts so that the subchapters do not differ too much in their number.

Creation of a text section: It represents the fulfillment of the main chapters and individual subchapters with materials from study and research, which the author enriches with his own attitudes, which must be suitably argued as well as acquired knowledge and his own research results. In order to better understand the technical explanations, tables, graphs, or various practical examples are often used to develop the theoretical line of work, thus adding to its illustrative character. This simultaneously confirms the author’s ability to work with professional text, the ability to understand it and interpret the acquired knowledge and information to the audience. Depending on the quantity and scope of the supplementary material, the author should consider its layout, ie whether it will be part of the main text part – the core of the work, or in order to prevent the impression of artificial increase in the scope of work, to be placed in the section entitled Attachments.

After completing the parts into a coherent whole, we recommend that the author define the space for the so-called “time-organizing schedule”. time break that should occur after writing a pre-qualification job. Its purpose is to gain a more critical view when re-reading the work after the incubation period and thus eliminating formal or content imperfections as well as refining the context and formulations.
